DEL MAR -- Race #9 -- GLORIOUS CHOICE (#10)
____________________________________________________________________

The 10th race is a Cal-bred straight maiden race for 2 year old fillies and
has a par of 97. (The distance was mistyped in the report and the correct
distance is 5-1/2 furlongs, not 6-1/2). Del Mar is the meet where Baffert
unveils some of his major 2 year olds and GLORIOUS CHOICE looks like one of
them. (He also has SHE'S MOVIN ON in here but that is not a filly of the
same quality. We beat SHE'S MOVIN ON's full brother yesterday in our spot
play race as the favorite when Baffert dropped him from Cal-bred straight
maiden to Cal-bred Md32000 and it looks like he'll also have to drop SHE'S
MOVIN ON to maiden claimers if he wants to win. Pedroza rides SHE'S MOVIN
ON for Baffert and whenever you see that you can pretty much move on without
giving the horse a serious chance).

Back to GLORIOUS CHOICE, she's a first time starter owned and bred by Golden
Eagle Farm. She is the daughter of Event of the Year (by Seattle Slew), who
was supremely talented and was one of the best 3 year olds of his year but
got a slab fracture 3 days before the Kentucky Derby and had to be
scratched. He looks like he has passed some speed onto his daughter because
she has a string of solid "Baffert-like" speed drills. Anyone hoping to
beat her had better hope that she breaks poorly but with 2 solid gate
workouts and a cozy outside post which can keep her in the clear for a
while, it definitely looks like conditions are right for her to run a big
race.

NICOLE AND BEN has the best raw pace and speed figures in here which was a
98-96 she earned in her one and only start. However, that race was against
Md40000 and I don't usually play a horse jumping from maiden claimers to
straight maidens, even if it's from an open maiden claimer to Cal-bred
straight maidens. She's probably a good choice for the exacta/quinella,
through.

GARDEN WHIMSY is a first time starter who I might keep an eye on for John
Shirreffs/Pat Valenzuela. She scratched yesterday from a Cal-bred $125,000
stakes sprint to run in this race instead. She would be the only other one
I will pay any attention to.

I couldn't really find a serious major contender so I'm going with a
straight win bet on GLORIOUS CHOICE. Linking her up in a small quinella
with NICOLE AND BEN and GARDEN WHIMSY would be a way to cover a place bet.
Good luck.
